How Skin Ages —
the Science, and What You Can Influence

Here's the fact most people don't know: your genes control only a small share of how your skin ages. Research cited in formulation science attributes as little as 3% of skin aging to genetics — the sun and lifestyle account for the rest, with UV exposure alone estimated to drive up to 90% of visible skin aging. Aging is inevitable; how fast your skin shows it is largely within your control. This page explains what's happening underneath, decade by decade, and what genuinely helps.

01Two kinds of aging

Intrinsic (chronological) aging is your biological clock — it begins quietly in your mid-twenties as collagen production slows and elastin loses spring. You can't stop it, but it's the smaller factor. Extrinsic (environmental) aging is everything external: sun, pollution, smoking, diet, sleep, repeated facial movement. This is the big one — and it's the one you can change.

02What's actually changing underneath

  • Collagen — the main structural protein, ~70% of skin's dry weight. Production slows with age and existing fibers become disorganized, which is what leads to lines and loss of firmness.
  • Elastin — gives skin its snap-back. It doesn't regenerate well; sun damage causes it to clump into "formless" material (elastosis), the hallmark of photo-aged skin.
  • Hyaluronic acid — binds water up to 1,000× its weight to keep skin plump. It starts to diminish as early as your forties, contributing to dehydration and fine lines.
  • Dermal thickness — the dermis can lose 20% (up to much more) of its thickness over a lifetime, so skin becomes thinner and more fragile.
  • Cell turnover — in youth, skin cells complete their cycle in ~20 days; by older adulthood that stretches to 30–40+ days, which is why mature skin looks duller without gentle exfoliation.

03The timeline — decade by decade

20s–30s

Collagen decline begins; the first fine lines appear where muscles repeat movements (eyes, forehead). Turnover just starts to slow.

40s

Hyaluronic acid begins to drop — skin feels drier. Cumulative UV surfaces as uneven tone and spots. Snap-back slows as elastin fragments.

50s & menopause

The steepest change. Estrogen supports collagen, hyaluronic acid, and skin thickness — as it declines, skin thins, dries, and loses firmness faster.

Throughout

Oxidative stress (free radicals from UV, pollution, and normal metabolism) degrades collagen and drives the low-grade inflammation that quietly speeds all of the above.

  • Sun — up to 90% of visible aging. UVA reaches the deep dermis; within 30 minutes of UV exposure, damaging free radicals (hydrogen peroxide) in skin more than double.
  • Smoking — smokers in their 40s often have as many facial wrinkles as non-smokers in their 60s, because smoke ramps up collagen-degrading enzymes.
  • Diet & sugar (glycation) — excess sugar bonds to collagen and elastin, forming Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) that stiffen and cross-link those fibers. Fried and highly processed foods are high in AGEs; fruits, vegetables, and gently cooked foods are low.
  • Pollution — depletes the skin's own antioxidants (vitamin E, squalene) and drives oxidative stress.
